Why do you choose chemistry as your major?
First of all, when I was young, I read a book called “discovering science”. It tells me a lot of stories of famous scientists like Madam Curie, Albert Einstein. They are making the world a better place with their effort and wisdom. They set a good example for me, and I want to be someone like them. Secondly, during my undergraduate years, I have learned fundamental knowledge of science and they inspire me to go further for more advanced theory. I would like to deepen my understanding in a certain field, such as how to predict the sequence of proteinusing carbon nanotubes. I choose this major only out of my personal interest.
Can you briefly describe your personality?
There are two words which can describe my personality: optimistic and persistent. First of all, I believe the world is magic and full of surprises. If you live your life by heart, you will feel that life is wonderful. I always cherish this kind of blessing and live every day to its fullest. Secondly, one has to work hard and persist to the end. When you look around, you can find competition is everywhere. People are struggling for their life and work. If you are lazy, you will definitely be left behind. Optimism makes me smile and persistence keeps me work.I am always like this: work while smiling.
How do you usually deal with the difficulty in life?
Actually, life has never been easy. I always have a lot of difficulty in study and life. For example, I have learned English for almost 10 years and still have trouble with oral English. I cannot communicate with foreigners freely. I always want to translate words in my mind. Though there are things need improving, I never lose my confidence to overcome it. Practice makes perfect, I believe. There are many foreign students in my university and a few of them are English-speaking. I made a friend with an exchange student from the US. I taught her Chinese and she taught me English. In this way, we both had a significant improvement in our foreign language.
Who is your favorite teacher and why?
My college English teacher Mrs. Zhang is my favorite teacher. She is in her forties, and has quite active personality. She is very patient during the class. Sometimes, I asked her some dull questions, she never criticized me for that. Instead, she explained to me again and again until I realized how easy the question was. Unlike other teacher of her age, she also knows well enough the meaning of life and work, and has keen pursuit of both career success and life enjoyment. I admire the way she works and lives. She is a successful mother and a successful teacher.
How do you arrange your day during the preparation for the graduate school admission test?
Well, I have to say, it is one of the hardest periods in my life. Generally speaking, I am an early bird. I like to get up early in the morning, go out to breath the fresh air first, then do some reading aloud while listening to the bird singing with the red sun in the east. I can memorize a lot of things in this way. After jogging, I would like to go to the library to study. I like to find a corner in the reference room in the library and enjoy studying alone there. Thinking independently makes me more mature. In the afternoon, after taking a nap, I would continue with my study all the way into the night. But all work and no play make Jack a dull boy. I would read some books, like the Da Vinci Code, when I feel tired. Music can also help me relax. I would go back to the dormitory after 10:00 p.m. and go to bed at 11:00.
Do you like sports？Which sport do you like the best?
I like various sports, but Ping-Pong is my favorite. I often go to Ping-Pong club to play it. It is so important to me that it has already become part of my life. First, it can make me physically strong. As a college student, I am facing a lot of pressure from my study and my future. Playing table tennis can let out my emotion and release my pressure. Second, I have made a lot of friends. It is really nice to have so many friends with the common interest. Indeed, I like to communicate with them when I am in trouble. Playing table tennis makes me more quick-witted, and I really enjoy it very much.
Can you describe your favorite book?
I have read many kinds of books, among them I found “the old man and the sea” by Ernest Hemingway the most encouraging. This book tells a story of an old man from Havana fighting against a gigantic marlin. I was deeply impressed by the old man’s persistence on not giving upand his strong will to fight against bad luck. From the book I have learned success only belongs to those who are persistent and patient. Never say no to failure. The influence has still worked on me although I read the book ten years ago.
What do you think is your best quality and worst quality?
My best quality is that I am able to work hard. I may not be the best, but I always try my best. I still remember the time when I prepared for the graduate school admission test. I got up early and went to bed late. I kept on learning from dusk to dawn. I cut off the contact with my friends, which could help me concentrate. Eventually my efforts have paid off.Talking about my worst quality, I think that I am not an outward person; sometime I am shy to express myself. I love a girl, but I do not have the chance to tell her. Now she sees someone, so I am a bit disappointed. I hope I can seize the chance now and become a master candidate in your university.
Do you think learning English is important and why?
I think it is very important for us to learn a foreign language. First, I think English is very useful in today’s world. For example, in my field, there are many excellent groups in the US and Europe. I often read their papers and have been inspired by their ideas. If I can understand English well, I can communicate with these groups on some important issues. That could help me and the university to cooperate with other teams. Second, I like travelling and I would like to travel around the world. English can definitely help me when I travel, since it is the lingua franca across the world.
Which is your favorite type of movie？
My favorite kind of movie is romance movies. The charming actors such as Anne Hathaway are the most attractive factor for me to fancy at the loving movies. And the second reason may be more important. Watching this kind of loving movies is just like reading a textbook which teaches me how to love and be loved. Moreover, the recent loving movies are always our boys’ favorite topics when we get together and have a gossip. I do not want to be out of date when we are talking about things like that.
Should high school teach music and art besides basic science?
I bet no one could deny that the main responsibility of a high school is to help students develop academic abilities. But for a student himself, it is also very important to get fully educated in other fieldslike music and art as well as basic science. Music and art can help the students appreciate beauty in our lives. Music and art reflect our wisdom and are the creation of human civilization. Music and art courses can also help us relax and increase the efficiency of their basic science study. Therefore, they should be advocated to help understand our culture more profoundly.
Do you prefer the internet-based teaching or the traditional classroom?
In my opinion, I prefer traditional courses better. In the spring of 2003, when SARS attacked our city, we students were not allowed to gather in a classroom taking lessons; on-line course was our only choice. And I found it really boring and tedious. My only teacher and partner was the cold computer without any emotion. If I did not understand the text pretty well, I had no one to ask for help. The computer could answer some typical questions, which nevertheless seldom satisfied me. But on the other hand, attending traditional courses means we have teachers to interact and classmates to discuss or cooperate with. You cannot imagine how much I missed my teacher and classmates those days.
Do you think it is necessary to prohibit people from using phone calls in some places?
I definitely think that the use of a mobile phone should be forbidden in some places, for example, library. The most common reason for people going to a library is to finda silent environment to read their favorite books without interruption. But if you receive a phone call in the library or just send out messages, the mobile phone will ring. This noise will surely interrupt others in the library. And I do not think it is very polite.
Do you think we should choose universities located in big cities or in small towns?
I definitely prefer to study in a big city. The most common reason for us to study is to find a good job, and there are much more job opportunities in big cities than in the small town. If I study in the big cities, I can do a part time job while studying, and seize the opportunity to work thereafter I graduate from university. Moreover, jobs in big cities can offer more decent salary. So that’s why I think big city is more attractive for me to study in.
To be a leader or a follower, which do you prefer? Please give your opinion with specific examples and details.
Of course, I would like to be the leader. I think I am a born leaderbecause of two reasons. First, I am good at communicating with others. That is very important to lead a team with many complex troubles. With my splendid communication skills, I can make the atmosphere among my team members very harmonious. And second, I do not like to be regulated by others, so the only way to get rid of this status is to be the leader and regulate others myself.
